This is the Eternal Flame Waterfall, on Shale Creek, in Chestnut Ridge Park, near Buffalo, New York. A pocket of natural methane gas in an alcove below the waterfall seeps out through a fracture in the rocks. The flame goes out from time to time (it’s not really eternal) but is easy to relight. We’ll probably never know who the first person to light it was.

This place is actually kind of creepy. I agree with Daniel Grey, it would make a terrific setting for a The Thing remake.

I’m drawn to Every Day Carry. Knowing that many people drop the same equipment into their pockets and sacks when they walk out the door is oddly comforting. You know, phones, keys, pocket knife, chap stick, Walther PPK … wait, what? A gat? Surely that must be an EDC abnormality?
The new longer trains had center doors on each car, and at City Hall’s tight curve, it was dangerous to open them. It was decided to abandon the station in favor of the nearby Brooklyn Bridge station, and so City Hall was closed to passenger service on December 31, 1945. The street entrances were sealed and the skylights covered over.
Wow, this totally goes against all the images of NYC subway stations that have been drilled into my head by TV and movies over the years. Tours of the defunct station have been suspended, but riders can still get a glimpse of it from trains that pass nearby. (via uncertain times)

There was a ghoul in the Gorbals. It had iron teeth. It had taken two boys.
The Daily Record pieces together events surrounding some mass hysteria that took place 47 years ago in Glasgow, Scotland. The legend of the beast and the ensuing hunt was said to be “… fuelled by the magic of cinema and the wonder of American comics.” Great stuff, sounds like the work of The Abandonment King.
Read about these things in Zero History and had to look them up to see if they are real. So odd.
This video is pretty amazing, but I don’t know when I became so jaded. My first thought was that it’s some viral campaign for a crappy sci-fi movie. Sigh …
