Hi, my name is Guy, welcome to my frequently updated mess. You can also find me on the electronic mail.
It’s a slow burn: economy tanks, nature rebels against man, war, famine, and the next thing you know it’s post apocalyptic living. It may not be hordes of leather chap wearing, mohawk sporting, biker gang bad, but for some people it could be a real shit sandwich.
Who would help us?
This dandy from Alex Steffen outlines the Peace Corp of the post apocalypse.
Imagine folks like this passing out free textbooks, running holistic programs for kids, creating local knowledge management systems, launching microfinance projects, mobilebanking and complementary currencies. Helping rural landowners apply climate foresight and farm biodiversity. Building cheap, smart, quality housing for displaced people (not to mention better refugee camps), or an Open Architecture Network for cheap informal rehabs of run-down suburban housing. Hacking together DIY windmills and ad hoc smart grids, communication systems, water treatment systems — and getting really good at adaptive reuses of outdated infrastructure. In other words, these folks would be redistributing the future at a furious clip.
I wonder if we shouldn’t start this up now? (via)
